About Document Metadata & Client-Side Security

Understand the hidden data inside your files

Metadata is often described as data about data. In the context of documents and images, it refers to the hidden information embedded within a file that describes its origin, authorship, creation date, software used, geolocation, camera settings, and more. UniDocApp leverages advanced client-side JavaScript to read and modify these properties directly in your browser without ever uploading your files to a remote server, ensuring full GDPR and CCPA compliance by eliminating server-side processing, data retention risks, and unauthorized third-party access. Learn more about our privacy practices.

Whether you're removing the author name and company details from a Word document before sending it externally, stripping GPS location data from a photo before posting it online, or updating PDF properties for archival compliance, UniDocApp gives you an enterprise-grade toolkit that respects your privacy by design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about UniDocApp

UniDocApp is an advanced, browser-based metadata editing suite designed for professionals who need to manage document properties across PDF, Office, and image formats. It performs all operations locally using modern Web APIs and open-source parsing libraries.

Original metadata is preserved only within your current browser session. Once the page is refreshed or the file is overwritten, the original state is lost unless you kept a backup. For GDPR compliance, always save a copy of the original file before editing so you can recover the original metadata if needed.

UniDocApp currently supports the following formats: PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, JPG, JPEG, and PNG. The underlying composition of these formats is handled leveraging libraries such as pdf-lib, JSZip, and piexifjs.

Yes, but typically by only a minuscule amount. Adding, removing, or modifying metadata alters the byte overhead of the document header or embedded XMP/EXIF segments. The visual or textual content of the document remains completely untouched.

Metadata serves critical functions in document management, digital journalism, digital forensics, SEO, and copyright protection. It records authorship, creation dates, modification histories, camera settings, and geolocation enabling search, categorization, version control, and authentication workflows.

Yes. UniDocApp is entirely free to use and operates solely within your browser. Because files are processed locally and never uploaded to external servers, it is exceptionally safe for sensitive documents, legal files, and proprietary imagery.

No. Your documents are processed in-memory and are never transmitted over the network nor stored in cloud databases. Once you close the browser tab, all loaded file data is cleared from memory. You retain complete control and ownership.

Upload your PDF or DOCX file, open the Author field in the metadata panel, clear or replace the text, then download the updated file. The change applies instantly and no server ever sees your document during the process.

Yes. Use the Remove GPS button to clear only the location fields, or use Privacy Mode if you'd rather strip everything at once, including camera details, timestamps, and author information.

You can load several files into the editor and update each one's metadata individually. A dedicated one-click Batch Processing tool for applying the same change across every file simultaneously is currently under active development.
